The city (SF)has been progressive, and they've been leaders and it appears that they're stepping out of the pack again, said, Chris Peck, the California's Integrated Waste Management Board spokesman.
First, the greenies (or my favorite term, the Dirt People), said paper bags were killing the Earth, so the entire country was forced to switch to plastic. I'm sure that made sense to some moron at the time. I admit, I have grown fond of the plastic bags. Now the Dirt folks say plastic bags are the scourge of the Earth, and we must switch to Paper.
Wasn't that what we started with? But that's not the point of this, just a side thought.
This is about the Dirt peoples new plan in San Francisco. I used to love that city.
California has mandatory recycling. Every household and apartment complex has separate bins for plastic and cans, and paper and cardboard. Some folks I know have a bigger recycle bin compared to their garbage bin, due to the amount of spirits consumed.
All that is fine and well. But the Dirt folks are never happy with past laurals. They now have their sights set on food scrapes. Banana peals, coffee grounds, egg shells, old baloney, you name it. So in the state that has no money, everyone will now get a food refuse bin. I am sure they will charge everyone for this in the long run. The apparent goal is to do away with landfills. As the food bins contents will head for some compost pile somewhere. I guess they will need new special Refuse Trucks for this plan as well.
I am not sure why they want to eliminate land fills, I think North Beach is built on one, but that is the goal.
So, if you are a naughty food scrap law breaker in 2010, you will get a little note from the Food Scrap Refuse Collector. After 2010, if you haven't mended your ways, you will start getting fined. I believe they start at $100. Nothing like forced compliance of sillyness.
I remember when collecting beer and coke cans was a nice way for a bum to make a living. It was a win win for everyone. Bums made money, streets stayed clean, recyclers made money. Then the state took the idea, made it mandatory, and started running things. I believe it has been a money loser ever since. Bums are now only bumming, and the is no incentive for anyone to pick up the trash in the road.
Just remember, whatever screw ball idea the Dirt folks come up with in SF, eventually finds it's way into ever single other state.
